Note: A polished Diamond has many different shapes, but, in this article we are sharing the knowledge as per Round Brilliant Shape diamonds, which is widely and mostly used all over the world.
Which are the 4C’s which define diamonds quality and brilliance?
- CARAT (Weight)
Now that you know names of 4C’s of diamond, let’s get to know each of them in brief, which can result in healthy purchase of diamonds for everyone. Don’t forget to checkout diamond pricing insights as per diamond perameters whil you’ll find at the end of this article.
It is primary and very essential criteria of diamond, cut speaks the proportion of facets of diamond in the way diamond is brutted. Cut is defined by various proprties of facets in diamond like Table %, Total Depth %, Crown Height & Angle, Pavalion Height & Angle and more (check all properties of cut in the image below). The basic idea to give cut grades is to simplify understanding a diamond’s brilliance. When all the properties of facets made perfectly, The Fire and Luster looks so amazing and beautiful. Let’s have a look at what type of Cut grades are given to diamonds by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) which is one of the best labs across the world in certifying diamonds, and, which grade is best and which one is worst.
Every diamond is categorized in different colour grades according to how white or coloured a diamond is. There are mostly all color of diamonds come out from mines i.e White, Yellow, Green, Brown, Red, Purple & more, but, the main color in general use is WHITE. The white color also has different grades to define it’s exact brilliance and quality which is classified in 23 colour grades from D-Z in alphabetical order where D being the most colourless and Z being most coloured diamond. In other words D is the most white diamond with more value and Z is offcourse coloured one with yellowish or brownish tint, which has lesser value. Check some examples below, how a D, H, N & Z color looks like.
“A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond has no hue, like a drop of pure water, and consequently, a higher value. ” according to GIA.
But, the variations of color are not easily identifiable for an untrained eye , for most people these colour differences are so subtle but it has a very big impact on the value of diamond. Only certified graders can see the depth of colour or colourlessness in a diamond. Hence, it’s better to buy any diamonds or diamond jewelry with certificate of known gem labs.

Clarity or Purity means pureness of a diamond from internal inclusions, it evaluates how pure the diamond is. Do you know that a rough diamond comes with many imperfections/inclusions in it? Only rare diamonds comes with fully pureness which has no imperfactions.
Diamonds are created when tremendous heat and ectreme pressure creates on exposed carbon deep in the earth. This process relates in different type of internal and external incusions in the diamond. Simply, the more inclusion a diamond have, the lest fire and value it creates. Pure diamonds are highly expensive in priice and rarely found. So, what are the grades given to a diamond to evaluate it’s clarity? and what clarity of diamond one should buy? check below.
Which are the clarity grades of polished diamonds given by GIA?
- FL – Flawlwss
- IF – Internally Flawless
- VVS1 – Very Very Slightly included 1
- VVS2 – Vet Very Slightly Included 2
- VS1 – Very Slightly Included 1
- VS2 – Very Slightly Included 2
- SI1 – Slightly Included 1
- SI2 – Slightly Included 2
- I1, I2, I3 – Included
You can see different grades that evaluates diamond clarity where FL & IF are pure diamonds without imperfections and Included (I1, I2, I3) have many imperfections and inclusions. It’s obvious that FL is way more costlier than Included clarity. So, which one should you buy? Well, the question totally depends on buyer behaviour and budget. But, answering generally, many people go for VS or SI clarity as it dont it’s inclusions are not easily visible by normal eye and yes, it comes in budget prices too. However, there are some regions, countries where people buy flawless or VVS clarity because they do not want to compromise anything and have bigger budgets.

4. CARAT (Weight)
How do we measure weight of a diamond? CARAT. 1 Carat equals to 200miligrams or 0.20gms, and so 5carat of diamonds weights as little as 1gram. Each carat weight counts as per hundredth decimal to precisely know it’s exact value.

Weight of a diamonds and it’s measurements (i.e Lenth, Width and Height) relates to each other and, there is a rule of how much lenth or width should be in a perticular carat weight, to give maximum brilliance to a diamond. And, it directly refects to CUT grade of a diamond too. For example, a 1.00 carat diamond’s potential lenth should be between 6.30-6.50mm to give it maximum sparkle. If it’s so, the cut grade can be excellent, but suppose the lenth is 6.20mm only, the CUT grade can not be “EXCELLENT” evenif all other parameters are perfect. Beloe, we have attached an image to check the relation of diamond weight and it’s measurements.
